How We Care
The right way to clean a headstone
A headstone is meant to last centuries. The wrong methods — the ones you'll see on viral videos — can undo generations of stonework in a single afternoon. We do it the slow, gentle, proven way.
No Power Washers. Ever.
Pressure washing forces water into the stone's pores, blasts away the polished surface, and can chip lettering that took a craftsman hours to carve. We clean by hand with soft brushes and gentle rinsing — the way conservators do it.
No Unproven Chemicals
Bleach, vinegar, and hardware-store cleaners eat into marble, granite, and limestone. We only use D/2 Biological Solution — the same biocide trusted by the U.S. National Cemetery Administration, Arlington National Cemetery, and the National Park Service.

A little about headstones
Understanding the stone helps you understand why we work the way we do. Every memorial is different, and every one deserves care matched to its age, material, and condition.
Marble & Limestone
Softer, more porous stones common on older memorials (pre-1930s). Extremely vulnerable to acid, bleach, and pressure. Require the gentlest touch and patience — biological growth is lifted over days, not scrubbed off in minutes.
Granite
Dense and durable, but its polished finish can be permanently dulled by wire brushes, abrasive pads, or high-pressure water. Modern memorials are almost always granite and still deserve careful, chemical-safe cleaning.
The Black & Green You See
Those dark stains aren't dirt — they're living lichen, moss, and algae with roots that grow into the stone. Wiping doesn't remove them; they must be killed at the root with a safe biocide, then allowed to weather away naturally over weeks.
Why Photos Matter
Stone cleaning is a slow, respectful process. Some staining continues to fade for months after our visit. We send before-and-after photos so families in another town — or another state — can see their loved one's memorial is being cared for.

Turning my place of peace into what it should be
I've known more loss than I ever expected to. The cemetery became my place of peace — a quiet, sacred space where I could sit with the people I love and miss every day.
I keep all of my loved ones' headstones clean. It's how I show them I'm still here, still thinking of them. But every time I visit, I see others — forgotten, weathered, or simply left behind because someone couldn't get there. It pains me deeply.
So I decided to turn my place of peace into what it should be: a beautiful resting place, for everyone. That's why BWC exists. Because we care — sincerely, gently, and out of love for those gone but not forgotten.
